Suzhou Institute of Technology is located in Changshu, Suzhou—a nationally renowned historical and cultural city, an international garden city known for its rich cultural heritage and picturesque landscapes. It is a full-time public undergraduate institution co-established by the provincial and municipal governments.

 

The institute traces its origins to Suzhou Teachers College, founded in 1958. In 1989, Suzhou Teachers College merged with Changshu Vocational University to form Changshu College. In 2001, Jiangsu Population School was incorporated into the institution. In 2004, it was upgraded to an undergraduate college and renamed Changshu Institute of Technology. In 2025, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, it was renamed Suzhou Institute of Technology.

 

The institute has been recognized as a pilot institution for the National Education System Reform, a project university for the Integration of Industry and Education in Applied Undergraduate Institutions during the National 13th Five-Year Plan, a reserve institution for the National 14th Five-Year Plan Education Power Promotion Project, a pilot university for the Ministry of Education's "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program," a vice-chairmanship unit of the National Higher Education Quality Assurance Alliance, the first pilot institution for the Ministry of Education's Qualification Assessment of Undergraduate Teaching in Regular Higher Education Institutions, and one of the first pilot institutions for the Ministry of Education's Undergraduate Education and Teaching Audit Assessment.


School Overview

The university currently has two campuses, Donghu and Southeast, covering a total area of over 1,800 mu (approximately 120 hectares) with a floor area of more than 600,000 square meters. It comprises 14 secondary colleges (or departments) and offers 51 undergraduate programs (including 31 engineering disciplines), along with 3 professional master's degree authorization points. The university has a full-time undergraduate enrollment of over 20,000 students, independently trains more than 100 full-time postgraduate students, collaborates in training over 80 full-time postgraduate students, and has more than 5,000 students enrolled in adult degree education programs.

 

The university employs over 1,600 staff members, including more than 1,200 full-time faculty. Among them, over 770 hold senior professional titles, and more than 730 hold doctoral degrees. The faculty includes 1 foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 academician from a developed country, 5 recipients of national-level talent programs, and over 300 recipients of provincial-level or above honors and talent projects. These include provincial/master-level teaching masters, Ministry of Education New Century Excellent Talents, provincial-level "Outstanding Contribution" experts, provincial "Model Teachers of Ethics," provincial "333 Project" training candidates, provincial "Six Talent Peaks" grant recipients, provincial "Entrepreneurship and Innovation Doctors," and provincial "Blue Project" training candidates. The university has established 14 provincial-level excellent teaching/scientific and technological innovation teams.
